Artist Workshops
Sponsored artists invited to learn how to make Goose Feet Basket.  Igah Hainnu - Clyde River (Chairperson for Nunavut Arts and Crafts Association) will provide instruction on how to create Goose Feet Basket.

Taken from Interview with artist Igah Hainnu:

"First of all, it takes three birds to make a basket. Some people in our community eat them, so to make good use of the feet I started making baskets. My late grandmother had showed me how to make baskets out of the feet. Back then they were used for storing oil lamp wicks called kudlik. They would collect Arctic cotton and store it in the baskets. I usually put cans inside them to give them support and to keep them from breaking easily. I put gloss on them because they are fragile when they dry up. The black baskets are made from older Canada Geese feet with black seal skin. The fur from the seal skin has been scraped off and the white part of the seal skin has been dipped in hot water and then scraped. The gray baskets are made from young Canada Geese feet and the yellowish baskets are made from older Snow Geese feet.”

And then, after the formalities it’s time to rock! Rankin’s own, The Flatlands and the Midnight News will be sure to get you up and dancing the night away.

The Flatlands—vocalist Sarah Morley, guitarists Ryan Alexander and Ray Ghomeshi, and drummer Evan Morrison — are a Rankin Inlet based rock outfit that showcase a variety of musical genres using guitar, drums, bass, flute, and vocals.  The 4 members, originally from the Maritimes, come from a place known for its hilly landscapes, so the term Flatlands was born to describe their Northern home.  They will be joined on stage by musical group The Midnight News who are sure to rock your socks off.  The evening will include hits from Johnny Cash, Bon Jovi, The Tragically Hip,  ACDC, Journey and more!
